The final book of the Admiral Jim trilogy begins with his appointment to the Admiralty Board and his final two appointments, firstly as Commander-in-Chief Fleet and secondly Commander-in-Chief Home Command. Commander-in-Chief Fleet carried with it a number of other appointments, the principal of which were the NATO Commander-in-Chief Channel Command and NATO Commander-in-Chief Eastern Atlantic. He retired from the Navy in 1983, having served for eleven years as an Admiral. His subsequent life became closely associated with the world of international politics. He was appointed Director of the Royal v Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, an internationally respected think-tank that had been established in the immediate aftermath of WWI. He himself describes it as "
a think-tank before think-tanks were thought of"
